B'Jazz week |
 |
Sights
and sounds for an all-round cultural
experience
The pure sound of cellar bar jazz:
swingin' rhythm, swingin' audiences.
This type of music and the town of
Burghausen form a harmony, for jazz
music expresses the essence of
Burghausen. Like a musician freely
finding the right notes and rhythm, the
local people enterprisingly arrange
their cultural life -- whether it's by
attending a concert, going to the
theatre or the cinema, being entertained
at a revue or cabaret show, watching a
dance performance or listening to
literature readings. Art, traditions,
festivals and celebrations are features
of a packed programme.
And back to the castle: It's home to the
town museum, a photography museum,
painting collections, exhibitions and
artisans, and it provides the setting
for magnificent events -- reasons to
keep coming back.
|
The jazz scene in Burghausen has made
its mark. The bronze plaques on the
pavement of the "Street of Fame" pay
tribute to the great musicians who have
contributed to the international acclaim
of the B'Jazz week for more than 30
years.

Mid-summer/mid-winter
celebrations |

|
Each year,
the historic Sonnwendfeier
(mid-summer/mid-winter celebrations) are held in
cooperation with the town of Burghausen on the
Bergerhof premises, as well as the two-day,
historic Burgfest (castle festival).
Historic costume, court pageantry, torches, fire,
the aroma of roasted food, the smell of
gunpowder, the clashing of swords, the beating
of drums, the clip-clop of horses' hooves,
bustling farmers, diligent market traders,
beggars, musicians and wandering poets take
visitors back in time, plunging them into life
in the Middle Ages.

Town/Local History Museum of
Burghausen |
The
Burghausen castle is one of the largest and most
impressive defensive installations in Europe.
After 1475, Duke George "the wealthy" of
Landshut/Lower Bavaria and his Polish consort,
Hedwig, carried out broad renovations and
expansions of the fortress complex, which had
begun in the 13th Century. Since then, this
late-medieval castle has remained largely
unchanged.
The Town Museum is housed in the former bower,
or lady's boudoir. Found here were the "parlours
and chambers of the mistress, the pewter and
canvas chamber, the maiden's room and parlours,
the silver chamber, the steward's chambers, the
chapel parlour and the groundsman's chambers."
Distributed over 4 floors, the museum displays
its extensive collection in 30 rooms. In its
function as a museum of local history, the town
museum provides an overview of the town of
Burghausen's history, its art and culture, and
its surroundings.
